Daily Candy

Online Review - April 1, 2005
Versatile little creatures, frogs. They thrive in almost every corner of the globe, can leap more than 20 times their length, and are as happy in water as on land. But there's at least one place they're rarely welcome: the dinner table. Understandable enough.

RED RIVER TRADING COMPANY CELEBRATES MOTHERS DAY WITH A JAPANESE FLOWER ARRANGING CLASS

Past President of the Ikebana Society of Boston teaches the class
Red River Trading Company welcomed Masako Yatsuhashi of the Ikebana Society of Boston to present a demonstration and hands-on class on the art of Ikebana, or Japanese flower arranging. Why just give mom flowers when you can give her the experience of this ancient Japanese flower arranging technique?

People in every era have loved flowers, but Japanese predecessors felt that flowers were not only beautiful but they could reflect the passing of time and the feelings in their hearts. When one senses plants, unspoken words, and silent movements, one intensifies impressions through form, which becomes Ikebana. Ikebana arranges plants cut and removed from nature so that they are filled with new beauty when placed in a new environment. Rather than simply re-create the shape a plant had in nature, Ikebana helps to create a new form with the help of branches, leaves and flowers. Ikebana considers a flower¹s bud the most beautiful, for within the bud is the energy of life¹s opening to the future. Past, present, future...in each moment plants, and humans, respond to an ever changing environment. Like a poem, Ikebana expresses both the beauty of flowers and the beauty of longing in our hearts.

Masako Yatsuhashi was born in Nagasaki, Japan, where during her childhood she became exposed to the art of Ikebana. Yatsuhashi hold degrees in education from but the Kwasui Women¹s College and Kobe College. She has been teaching and demonstrating the techniques of Ikebana to adult education classrooms, garden clubs and universities throughout the East Coast and Canada for over 25 years. Each year, she participates in the New England Spring Flower show with demonstrations and displays on the art of Ikebana. Yatsuhashi is a former two-term president of the Ikebana Society of Boston (which is the Boston chapter of the oldest school of Ikebana in Japan) and past president of the Ikebana International Boston Chapter. She holds a professorship for Ikebana and is also a board member of the Japan-America Society of New Hampshire

Red River Trading Company is a home furnishings store in the South End offering unique, difficult to access antique and reclaimed teak furniture and accessories sourced from the Far East. The collection includes the basic furnishing necessities of life from beds and chairs to dining tables and storage chests. Unique pieces from the antique Chinese collection will give the opportunity to add a touch of oriental style. Red River's goal is to provide objects that 'tell a story' and can serve as creative springboards for 'themes' in one's home. The antiques have been carefully restored while the reclaimed selection utilizes teak timber from old floorboards, benches and door panels. The wide assortment hails from China, Indonesia, and beyond and has been selected for both its character and function.

The Red River Trading Company evolved from the idea that rivers are the source of life and inspiration. The collection springs from Asia, and the color red represents both joy and passion and is used on every happy occasion.

RED RIVER TRADING CO., 55 Waltham Street, showcases unique furniture and accessories from Asia. Owners Jonathan Golnik and his wife, Phyllis Rothschild, travel to Asia regularly to replenish the store's core collection of Chinese teak furnishings. There's a lot to see in the shop, but a pair of red-lacquer hatboxes ($450) and a mid-20th-century sculpture from Java ($750) are particularly intriguing.

Orient Express…The South End’s trendy home furnishings market expanded yet again with the mid-May addition of Red River Trading Company on Washington Street. Asian-influenced antiques reclaimed teak furniture, wood sculpted Buddhas and lacquered trunks grace the showroom floor of the company’s debut retail space. Founder Jonathan Golnik, well versed in Asian art, travels extensively in Indonesia and China to buy products for the shop. After a glance at the Web site, particularly the Trail Tales link, it looks like the company aims to do for furniture what J. Peterman did for clothes-whimsical stories and all. 1313 Washington St., South End (617 542 2223). www.redrivertradingco.com

Hello good-bye

Comings and goings on the South End business scene

BY SUSANNA BAIRD
…and I say hello
The Red River Trading Company won’t be filling the rug-gap left by Kybele, but like Kelliher, the new Wilkes Passage store’s owners bring treasures from afar to the South End.

The Waltham Street store (technically at 1313 Washington Street) will house “difficult-to-find antique and reclaimed teak furniture as well as home furnishings” from Asia, according to a press release. The antiques are Chinese and made primarily from traditional woods elm and camphor. Red River’s teak items hail from Indonesia and are constructed using largely “reclaimed” teak, wood recovered from old structures.

Red River’s owner Jonathan Golnik lived on Union Park with his wife Phyllis Rothschild for three years before his foreign currency trading career required a move to London. His job took him around the world, “exposing him to the beautiful furniture, accessories and art in Asia,” explained Rothschild.

Golnik and Rothschild are excited to be part of the South End again. Rothschild explained that the couple’s children, born while they were in London, motivated Golnik and Rothschild’s decision to settle in the suburbs upon their return to the States. But ‘we miss the South End,” she said. “We are especially attracted to the excitement around the area and hope to provide a great resource for newcomers moving into the many lofts and apartments being built here.

Press Release - April 18 2003,

RED RIVER TRADING COMPANY
to bring Unique Asian Furniture and Furnishings to Boston’s South End in early May, 2003, the Red River Trading Company will open its first retail store in the Wilkes Passage building at 1313 Washington Street. The store will offer difficult-to-find antique and reclaimed teak furniture as well as home furnishings sourced from the Far East.

The store will offer a mix of carefully restored antiques with new furniture made from reclaimed teak timber from old floorboards, benches and door panels. In addition, there is a rich selection of complementary home furnishings such as wood carved Buddhas, lacquered boxes and trunks, antique ceramic sculptures and teak bowls. The wide assortment has been chosen for both its character and its function and hails from China, Indonesia, and beyond.

The Red River Trading Company name evolved from the idea that rivers are the source of life and inspiration. The collection springs from Asia, where the color red represents both joy and passion and is used on every happy occasion. Red River relies on a team of highly trained international experts in fine art and furniture with over 30 years of sourcing and importing experience. The founder Jonathan Golnik has a curiosity for cultures other than his own, a keen interest in international adventure, and a love of quality art and craftsmanship.

Jon comes from a family of artists and since adolescence has been involved in the arts focusing on pottery and stained glass. Professionally, he had worked for years overseas as an emerging markets foreign exchange trader and had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the Far East. After his travels Jon became convinced that his experiences could translate into a unique and inspiring furniture and home furnishings business.

In addition to the new store, an online resource www.redrivertradingco.com provides an inside look at the collection and features sections such as “Trail Tales” offering stories from buying trips throughout Asia as well as a photo gallery that captures candid scenes from the countries where the furniture is sourced. According to Golnik, “The unique imported objects tell a story and can serve as creative springboards for ‘themes’ in your home. Actually, there are two stories for every object. One is the simple story of how we came to find the object. The other is the imagined story of its prior life. And these unique items are priced similar to that of mass-produced mainstream furniture made with laminate, particle board, and glue. Quality craftsmanship using solid eco-sensitive materials is what Red River Trading Company is all about.”
