Note Regarding Solid Wood Furniture:

Red River Trading Co. strives to find unique and well made objects to bring back from our journeys. These objects have traveled thousands of miles to reach their Boston destination. We want our customers to love and appreciate them as much as we do.

Both our hard wood furniture (new construction) and our Chinese antique furniture are constructed from wood that is from a climate that has a humidity level of 70% on a year round basis. When moved from a climate with such a consistent high humidity level, the wood will expand/contract as it adjusts to the relative humidity in its new climate. Many pieces have been made with floating panels on its surfaces (tops, sides and doors) to accommodate the expansion and contraction of the wood as it adjusts. Each piece of furniture reacts differently as it acclimates. One might notice the seams of the panels expanding and contracting. These ‘fissures’ do not effect the structural integrity of the piece and are only cosmetic in nature. We like to think that they add character and personality to the piece. While there are many ways to merge these developments in the wood, we have found that it is best to leave the developments alone as the wood will continue to expand and contract through each changing season.
